Carnegie, Pa., April 12 - The life and philanthropies of industrialist Andrew Carnegie is the theme of the April, 1999 issue of Cobblestone, a national history magazine for children. Carnegie libraries and museums, and the Pittsburgh region, are highlighted in this magazine biography of the poor Scottish immigrant who became the richest man in the world.
The magazine includes articles regarding Andrew Carnegie's early days in Pittsburgh, the rise of his steel empire, and the Homestead Strike of 1892. The magazine also emphasizes his philosophy regarding philanthropy and highlights his donation of libraries and museums. This issue includes several photographs of Pittsburgh landmarks, including Carnegie Libraries on the North Side, Braddock and Homestead; skeleton of the Tyrannosaurus Rex dinosaur, in The Carnegie Museum of Natural History; and Carnegie Science Center.
Cobblestone, published by Cobblestone Publishing Company of Peterborough, N.H., is distributed to schools and libraries throughout the United States; monthly circulation is 32,000. Published since January of 1980, Cobblestone is now one of seven children's magazines, published by Cobblestone Publishing, including the well-known science magazine, Odyssey.
Glenn A. Walsh, a Life Trustee of the Andrew Carnegie Free Library in Carnegie, Pa., served as the Consulting Editor for this issue of Cobblestone. Mr. Walsh's article, "Carnegie Libraries: Free to the People," explains Andrew Carnegie's early interest in libraries and describes the history of some of the early Carnegie Libraries; this includes the founding of the Andrew Carnegie Free Library. Lynne S. Comunale, a Pittsburgh-area free-lance photographer, took most of the color photographs, in the issue.
This issue of Cobblestone is published as the Andrew Carnegie Free Library commemorates Andrew Carnegie's Declaration of Trust agreement, which legally established the Library 100 years ago as of April 20. This month also marks the centennial, on April 2, of Andrew Carnegie's awarding of a grant for the construction of the Carnegie Free Library of McKeesport, Pa.
This magazine issue is now available, for in-library reading, in the historic children's room of the Andrew Carnegie Free Library, and in the children's departments of many other public and school libraries, nationwide.
Additional information about the life of Andrew Carnegie and the history of Carnegie libraries and museums, including an Andrew Carnegie photo album, can be found on the Internet web site of the Andrew Carnegie Free Library at the Internet address: http://www.clpgh.org/ein/andrcarn.
